We currently have a vacancy for a Tackling Indigenous Health Promotions Officer to join our fantastic and welcoming team in Roebourne, Western Australia.

This critical role will see you engaging with the Roebourne and surrounding communities and developing and delivering resources that promote health and well-being and increase health literacy and awareness throughout the west Pilbara region.

You will also have access to salary sacrificing as well as Meals and Entertainment.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the Programs Manager at Mawarnkarra, you will be responsible for developing and delivering resources into the community that raise awareness of tobacco-related health issues and increase health and well-being within the communities. These crucial programs aim to provide holistic, primary health care services and improve health literacy within the Aboriginal communities of the West Pilbara region.

The core responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, plan, implement and evaluate Healthy Lifestyle or similar Health or Community engagement/development programs;
  • Plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate health promotion programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander target groups in the target area;
  • Guide health promotion professional practice, including community development, through the use of contemporary theoretical frameworks and methodology;
  • Support others within the Tackling Indigenous Smoking team to problem-solve challenging situations and issues; and
  • Collects, analyses, and disseminates qualitative and quantitative data to assist with the planning and evaluation of health promotion activities.

Working collaboratively with the community, partner and professional organisations, you will utilise these relationships to develop the comprehensive resources required and improve the understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's health, social and emotional wellbeing.

Our next superstar

Demonstrated experience working in health promotion program planning, development, implementation and evaluation, will assist you to succeed in this role. You will ideally have qualifications in health promotion, health services or similar or bring experience in a similar position.  Experience working in remote communities and tobacco control health promotion, while not essential, will be highly regarded.

With strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, you will understand the importance of connecting with communities and understand that this takes time, patience and the ability to understand the other person's position. This multi-faceted position will require someone with strong time management and record-keeping skills, and the successful candidate will need to bring these to the role.

All Mawarnkarra employees are required to undergo regular drug and alcohol testing.

Mawarnkarra - A Brief History

Mawarnkarra was established in 1985 in Roebourne; and achieved incorporation under the Aboriginal Councils Associations Act (1976) on the 20th of March 1986.

The name “Mawarnkarra” comes from the Yindjibarndi language and its meaning is translated to mean “one with power to heal”. Mawarnkarra is pronounced, “MAR –WARN- GAR-DAR”. In the Ngarluma language, we say, “MAR-BARN-GAR-DAR”.

The Mawarnkarra symbol of the “Emu” or JARNGURNA represents the oil which is taken from the emu and is used for healing.

In 2005, the new clinic complex at Sholl Street in Roebourne, where we continue to run our service from today, was completed. Mawarnkarra also delivers some Health Programs from a separate property that is also located on Sholl Street in Roebourne.

In 2009, the incorporation status of the organisation was transferred from the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). The service is now registered as Mawarnkarra Health Service Limited.

Mawarnkarra is the largest primary health care provider providing direct services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in the Roebourne area.
